Flush volume depends on the toilet
Modern toilets commonly use substantially less water per flush than older models. The exact amount depends on the toilet's design and its rated flush volume, so the number printed on the fixture or its documentation is the best starting point.
Estimate household use
A simple estimate is: flushes per day × flush volume × 365. For example, if a toilet uses 1.28 gallons per flush and a household averages 10 flushes per day, the arithmetic is 1.28 × 10 × 365, or about 4,672 gallons per year.
Why the number matters
Because toilets are flushed every day, small differences in per-flush volume can add up over a year. This is one reason toilet efficiency is often discussed in household water conservation.
